The Best Selling Bands Of 2000

And time for our annual review of… well, the bands that sold the most during… er, the year 2000. What a crap intro piece, huh? Hopefully, the chart will be more interesting! Certainly to the bands, food for their insatiable egos J, bless ‘em. Not so much for my own ego though, whimper. I think this’ll be the last year my own little outfit are clear at the top, sob. We only beat the Gurus by 3 copies over a whole year! And we haven’t put out anything new in nearly five years. And they are talented and really good. You see the problem? We’re fucked, aren’t we? Anyway, as regular readers will know, we don’t count our own stuff in giving the accolade of Best Selling M&E Band Of The Year, coz it wouldn’t be fair, it being run by us an’ all. So, let’s add the Gurus to the roll of honour…

1992 – THE THAMESMEAD ROLLERS

1993 – WOBBLE JAGGLE JIGGLE

1994 – SONS OF SELINA

1995 – THE CONSPIRACY

1996 – STEVE ANDREWS

1997 – THE WITCHES

1998 – INNER CITY UNIT

1999 – INNER CITY UNIT

2000 – GURUS OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM

And many congratulations to the Gurus from all of us here. But spare a thought for poor old Judge Trev, his Inner City Unit’s two year stranglehold has been broken. Oh dear. I do have some news that will please him though; on 30th June last year, “Judgement & Thunder” (M&E 440) became the best selling M&E band album ever, overtaking Steve Andrews’ “Dive In Deep” (M&E 296). That pushes the seven year leader, Sons Of Selina’s “Ambition” (M&E 054) back to no.3 now. Though, of course, the Sons remain the only band to have genuinely won the Best Selling M&E Band Of The Year, when they and Wobble Jaggle Jiggle pushed my band back to 3rd in 1994. No mean achievement.

Checking the rest of the chart, it’s not just the Gurus that made a big comeback in 2000, Sleepy People flew back to the top of the pile too. Nice to see taste reigns supreme. Oh, and do take note that The Sleepies have now changed their name to Blue Apple Boy and have a new single out called “Freak”, go pester your local record store! Great to see some exceptional talents piercing the top 10 for the first time too. Sister Sinister have proved a great new favourite with our supporters, and no surprise, they really are something else. Good to see the exceptionally talented Sirenee up there too, I was always a fan of her stuff with B.D.F., welcome back, Renee! And finally, you’ve all woken up to how good Artemiy Artemiev is! And here it is in full…
